Music!

Cherry's hobby: disappearing for long periods of time without anyone noticing or caring. *g* I'm working on that.

As an apology for my complete and total lack of content, have some music.

Awesomecakes! 1:17 of some of my current favourite songs. Short enough to be burned to a CD, random enough that most people should find something to appreciate.

Track list and nattering. )

If anyone would like individual tracks uploaded, or further songs by featured artists, please just let me know.

I am Saskatchewan born and raised, and have lived my entire life here. Saskatchewan has a reputation as one of the inclement weather capitals of the world.

I tell you this so that when I say that this is one heck of a blizzard, it will have the proper impact.

This is what it looks like outside right now. (Image is stolen from the university webcam, click for full size.) I got lost in the alley on the way to my bus stop this morning because it was dark, and the snow was blowing straight up so that visibility was less than five feet.

I have talked to a number of people who have been with the university for a great number of years, and they cannot remember entire colleges just closing down. It is not a thing we do in Saskatchewan. At this point, everything's just been out-right cancelled. They're shutting down the transit system soon, and I waited for 45 minutes for my bus home, only to be forced to take one that drops off three blocks farther from my home. Frost-bitten legs, yay! I didn't know wool scarves would actually freeze to your skin, but you learn something new ever day. Possibly I should not have gone to school.

The goods news is that the snow is supposed to let up by tomorrow, so that we only have -45 with wind.

So, like [livejournal.com profile] sprat, I am taking this opportunity to share some songs that I love at the moment.

Twenty Years - Placebo. I know -- I wouldn't have thought I'd like Placebo either, but I love this song. Haunting. (We need to concentrate on more than meets the eye.)

Dirty Jeans - Magic Dirty. Australian upbeat rock. (Had to let you know that you're beautiful/And you make me go and/Even if you're taken that's no moves I'm makin'.)

Anger as Beauty - Hawksley Workman. Alt rock. You love him, or you hate him. (You're caught up in the only place/Where the honesty of fear/Makes a battle like a song)

Highway 7 and Electrik Heat: the Seekwill by K-Os. Instrumentally dense hip-hop. The first is reflective and melodic, the second makes you want to move.
cherry: (music (out of my head))
Well, this is clearly not my studying for tomorrow morning's final.

When I study, I have to have music. If I don't use music to shut out everything around me, I just can't concentrate. Bizarrely enough, I'm more distracted by silence that caterwauling. Only problem is that I've reached the point with my current music collection where I just can't listen to it anymore.

As such, I'm asking for music recommendations. The last few things added to my music library have been random Cuban/Celtic/Latin music, a best of Johnny Cash, some hip hop, Dixie Chicks, Muse, Brand New, Disney, k-os, random indie and post-punk, random folk, and random classical.

Basically, what I'm telling you is that I'm easy, and open to suggestion.

My LJ stocking - be adding fake gifts, please?. )

I'm still rebuilding my music collection from the great reformat of '06, but it's been a while since I did a music post.

1. Brokeback Mountain OST. I've stuck the entire soundtrack in a zip file, so it's one download. It's a mix -- old school country, new artists covering the old school, instrumental music, and Rufus Wainwright

2. Uraqt - M.I.A.. I'm kind of in love with M.I.A. at the moment. Her father was a revolutionary and she grew up all over the world. She's at this strange international corner of hip hop, dance, and pop. I found that her album Arular took a bit of getting used to, but it was well worth the effort.

3. For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti - Sufjan Stevens. I kind of adore Sufjan, and this is one of my favourites of his. Twangy, yet melodic, folk.

4. Santa Fe - Rent Soundtrack. My favourite song from Rent. Sweet and low, simple and jazzy. About wanting to be anywhere else. If anyone's interested in the entire soundtrack (or specific other songs), just let me know.

5. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - The Beatles. Probably my favourite Beatles tune.

6. Ghost World - Aimee Mann. There's something about the simplicity and honesty of this song that I just adore.

7. Wash My Hands - Meredith Brooks. Meredith is best known for her one hit single, Bitch. I was really quite fond of that entire album, and of large parts of its successor.

8. The Highwayman - Willie Nelson. Because it's a classic, and because last time I did song quotes meme, not a one of you caught this one.

Right click, save-as, tell me if you like/dislike, you know the deal. *G* I'm thinking the next round will be soundtracks and old school rock.
cherry: (jared!)
There was that 'Seven current favourite songs' meme going around for a bit, but I skipped it as some of my current seven favourite songs were uploaded in other music posts, so this is seven songs I enjoy.

1. You Sound Like Louis Burdett - The Whitlams. This is one of my favourite songs of all time. Energetic bluesy rock. (All my friends are fuck-ups, but they're fun to have around) Which really says it all.

2. Black Horse and the Cherry Tree - KT Tunstall. Upbeat folk (rock). (I said/Don't look back, just keep on walking)

3. Jupiter - Gustav Holst. Classical. I have a real soft spot for all of The Planets.

4. The Story - 30 Seconds to Mars. I... don't just like them because I have this thing about Jared Leto. Really. I don't even care if liking them damages my indie cred. Enjoyable techno-rock. A Beautiful Lie may not be one the albums I'd take to a desert island, but it is one I listen to a lot around the house. (I've been thinking of everything/I used to want to be)

5. Santa's Going to Kick Your Ass - The Arrogant Worms. Because it's Christmas season, and this song makes me laugh. Grab it if you like the Worms, Christmas, angry reindeer, or if you haven't heard the Arrogant Worms.

6. Handshake - Metric. I've pimped Metric before. Low-fi indie. (Buy this car to drive to work/Drive to work to pay for this car)

7. Sweet Home Country Grammar - Skynard vs. Nelly. I have only recently discovered Mashups, and this one is probably my favourite. I know, I wouldn't have thought it would work, either.

Let's make this multimedia. Icon linkage as well. 20 Due South icons.

Down the streets, the weeks roll by...
cherry: (music)
There was whining here last night, but it's gone due to its being annoying.

So, I'm a blonde. I was supposed to meet my group at school this morning (Saturday work, yay) at 9:30 -- instead, I reset my alarm relative and somehow managed to catch the same bus as usual, so I'm here one hour early. One hour early on a Saturday. I'm really, really, not good with mornings.

Insta-music rec: This Bird Has Flown, various artists. It's a 40th anniversary tribute to The Beatles' Rubber Soul. Dar Williams, The Fiery Furnaces, The Donnas, Ben Kweller, Ben Lee, Ben Harper, Sufjan Stevens, Cowboy Junkies, and more.
cherry: (zen)
And now, for something completely different:

Recommend me some classical music.

I can't study without some sort of music on -- I just can't concentrate. I was thinking I'd put together a classical playlist specifically for the purpose.

I like (amongst others) Telemann, Grieg, Bach, and things in minor keys. I tend to prefer my Beethoven in very, very small doses and I'm not a huge fan of the harpsichord, but really, I'm open to pretty much anything.

3 Things

cherry: (metric)
First: It's been a while, so music uploads. I am as eclectic as always.
1. If I Wrote You (Live) - Dar Williams. How much do I love Dar? Enough that this is the third consecutive set of mp3s that include a song by her. Melodic. Gorgeous voice, lyrics, instrumentals.
2. XO - Fallout Boy. Ish music. Indie(ish) rock. Upbeat(ish).
3. Radio/Video - System of a Down. I was suspicious of the new SoaD album, too. BYOB (the first single) didn't really grab me. The rest of the album, which I bummed off my brother, is very, very good. Experimental metal.
4. Somebody More Like You - Nickel Creek. A modern acoustic trio, with a guitar, a violin, and a mandolin pulled together into a rich, deep sound.
5. Hello - Poe. One of my favourite female vocalists. Haunting.
6. How to Explain - The Cat Empire. Fusion music. Swing/rock/jazz/dance. I adore them, and I recommend giving them a try -- if you don't like them, you don't like them, but I think they're a real treat.

I was going to stop there, but then I realized that Metric is coming through town on Monday, and I get to see them live again (so much love! Last time, they were through with Billy Talent.)
Bonus: 7. Wet Blanket - Metric. Low-fi indie. Great vocals. They grow on you like fungi. (Saying I'm wrong/To want more than a folk song)

Second: 20 Doctor Who icons.

The Doctor is in...

Third: Nabbed from [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl, who had the bright idea to take out the silly questions and the part ordering people around. If you want to post this in your LJ, too, that's cool. If not, also cool.

Comment and:
1. I'll respond with something random about you.
2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
3. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me.
4. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
5. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you.

Can I just say that those anonymous memes always make me slightly paranoid? I always get to thinking that the things that might otherwise not be said are about me. I am crazy.

My summer work contract has been extended another few days, to the end of the month. We were supposed to be off on the 26th, which was nice for moving and settling in in Saskatoon before school starts. Don't get me wrong, the extra money will be nice, but the moving right after work on the 31st, not so much.

Signed a six month lease earlier in the month on an apartment. I'm really kind of excited about it, even if I am lacking things like furniture and dishes. Hoping my parents will buy me one or two things for my birthday, before I start liberating milk crates for bookcases. (My own place! For more than four months!)

This is going to be a long and drawn-out move, with things being shuffled back and forth until the end of the month. I so hate moving, and this is the fifth time in the last two years or so I've done it.

Finally finished all of the requested drabbles, so it means I've done some writing in the last five weeks. Am working on an overhaul of my site, and it seems that I seriously haven't written ANYTHING in five weeks or so.

This is uncool.

I don't suppose anyone remembers that I was having trouble with registration? Well, it WAS fixed, but then apparently some sort of turf war broke out over admin putting me into a class that was full, and Bio demanded that I be pulled, so now my only hope is to go in with big eyes and an override form when school starts. As it is not my fault that I was unable to register, and I need the class now to get both degrees in five years, I am hopeful. Will remember to look as cute as possible that day. Fingers crossed.

Also, I've been compulsively mainlining Dar Williams lately.

So that there is actually something of interest in this entry, music downloads. A top five songs list I provided for [livejournal.com profile] sprat a little while back. (Right-click, save as, as always.)

1. Cool As I Am - Dar Williams Upbeat semi-folk that somehow reminds me of swing. Just give it a try.
2. Marvelous Things - Eisley Reminiscent of Sarah Slean. Grand music lines, some trilling.
3. Touchdown Turnaround - Hellogoodbye Boppy mixed music.
4. Caring Is Creepy - The Shins It's The Shins. Who doesn't love The Shins? Indie rock, gets under your skin.
5. Lovers In The Back Seat - The Scissor Sisters Fun techno-slide indie.

Question: Does anyone know how to get a journal header image to centre? I've got a new layout which I like, and I even threw together a header image. I just can't get it to stop sticking to the left side of the screen.

I wan't tagged, but I'm doing the meme anyway, just because I feel like it. Six songs I've been listening to a lot lately (in no particular order), completely with download links. Right-click, save as.

1. It Ended On An Oily Stage - British Sea Power (Alt. Rock, very smooth.)
2. Oh Canada Girls - Dar Williams (Folk, gorgeous song with great vocals.)
3. Media - John Butler Trio (It's JBT. Instrumental-ish, strong melody lines.)
4. Three Wooden Crosses - Randy Travis (Country.)
5. Commerce, TX - Ben Kweller (A song that never fails to make me smile. Upbeat without being overly pop-ish.)
6. Homewrecker - Hellogoodbye (Indie, makes you want to move.)
cherry: (music)
Let's see if I can make this work...

This is more of an attempt to cover a wide range of basis and is a tad more mainstream, as opposed to being my absolute favourite songs.

Click and enjoy. *G*

Bloc Party - Banquet. Head-bobbing music. Off-beat, slightly dancy, takes awhile to build, but always makes me want to move.

The Arrogant Worms - The Last Saskatchewan Pirate (Pirates of the Saskatchewan). The Arrogant Worms are always hilarious, and this song, for obvious reasons, gets a lot of play around here. Everyone should give it a spin. *Nod*

The Distillers - Dismantle Me. Probably my favourite Distillers track. Punk, or at least highly energetic.

The Cat Empire - Chariot. The Cat Empire is a highly idiosyncratic group, but if you're willing to give them a chance, you won't regret it. Jazz/rock/dance/trumpet. That's right. Trumpet.

Buck65 - Tired Out. Buck65 is a very different guy. Most of his stuff is layered, almost hip hop. Tired Out is a very stripped down, very chill track.

Sweatshop Union - The Things About It. Conscious Canadian hip hop. Yes, Kyprios is a part of the group, but don't hold that against them. If you have any interest in lyrics? You should check it out.

The Whitlams - Buy Now, Pay Later (Charlie No. 2). The Whitlams are one of my favourite groups right now, and this is one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard.

Tegan and Sara - Walking With A Ghost. I said I was covering my bases. Tegan and Sara tend towards the folk-ish side, but the mixing on this one is a bit more techno. It's not a combination I thought would work, but it somehow does.

Metric - Combat Baby. Metric is one of those groups: If you kind of like them the first time you hear them, you will grow to love them more and more with every listen. If, on the other hand, they don't strike your fancy? They likely never will. Combat Baby is a kick-ass song. Metric in general has very quotable lyrics, and they put on an amazing live show.

Spoon - Something To Look Forward To. Spoon is a solid group. They turn out rock music with very differentiated instrumental tracks. This is one of the songs on my happy-go-lucky mix CD. Singable, Spoon makes good driving music.

The Weakerthans - Plea From a Cat Named Virtue. The Weakerthans are generally enjoyable. In general, they're less stripped-down than Spoon is. They make me smile and keep me awake when I'm drifting off somewhere (or sometime) I shouldn't be.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y-Control. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a bastardized mixture of rock, new wave, metal, and even rockabilly; and it works. I find them to be refreshing. Y-Control is an example of Karen O at her finest, and always puts a bit of spring in my step.

Interpol - Slow Hands. Indie rock, low-fi. Interpol's latest album has been a very strong one, and I've been finding myself listening to it a fair amount. Slow Hands makes me want to dance without being a dance track. The layering is very good, and the instrumentals are very well balanced with the vocals.

New game! Let's spread the musical love. Tell me about a few good artists. Relatively unknown ones, if you don't mind -- we could talk about AFI, Foo Fighters, and Tori? But we all already know who they are and they're not artists people are likely to hop camps on.
