A question to my sensitive-skinned sisters out there: what product(s) do you use? Every since Oil of Olay randomly discontinued their sensitive-skin soaps, I've been trying to find a good alternative.

"Use Dove," is generally the advice I receive. However, despite their Real Beauty campaign, they (Unilever) also sell skin bleaching creams overseas. That's just not something I'm willing to support, even by proxy, so Dove is out. Avene makes a non-soap cold cream bar that I really like, but it's a little pricey, and bar soap just isn't ideal for the showers at the gym.

Anyone have any suggestions, store bought, homemade, or otherwise?

In other news: I have a passport and a plane ticket! I now have the legal ability and practical means to leave the country. Also, perhaps more importantly, to reenter it.

My skin is ridiculously sensitive. I use a hand-made soap that I get at the natural foods store. For liquid, I'd try a plain glycerine liquid soap, also available at natural foods places. Dove isn't sensitive enough for me, is how sensitive my skin is, but Ivory does okay in a pinch. The hand-made soap is pricey as well, but the plain glycerine liquid isn't too bad, I don't think.

I've been doing a modified version of the Oil Cleansing Method for my dry, sensitive, acne-prone skin, and it's never been happier. I use an oil-based cleanser (Burt's Bees) 3x a week and the rest of the time I just rinse my face with water. After cleansing, I apply a thin film of jojoba oil, and that's it. I've come to regard soap as my natural enemy. (: Maybe it would work for you?

*nod* The idea of oil cleansing is that oil dissolves oil -- and picks up whatever other dirt and grime you've got on your face. I haven't read anything specifically about OCM and sunscreen, but I'm sure Ms. Google will be your friend. (:

FWIW, the cleanser I've been using is this one, but I've been planning to switch to this one, since it has even fewer ingredients.

GRAR. I really don't get why websites do that.

Currently using Soap Bark & Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream, switching to
Orange Essence Facial Cleanser. After that I might try full-bore OCM: a blend of olive oil and castor oil for cleansing. We'll see.

I'd suggest going to your local coop and looking at organic body washes. Chances are they'd be pretty gentle.

Sounds like an idea! I think we might have different definitions of coops though, as Saskatchewan is rife with them. People go to the CoOp like they'd go to any other grocery store. I take it you're meaning something smaller?

Not a brand of story - usually a community -run cooperative with lots of organic and natural products. So, you go to it just like another grocery store, but the selection is a bit different.

I... just buy the generic Dove equivalent. Granted, I don't live in Canada, so there's only so much advice I can toss around, but it's been my experience that most stores tend to have their generic equivalent to things like that, and usually say "Compare to 'Insert Brand Name Here.' And they tend to be not only less expensive, but come in larger quantities. More bang for your buck, so to speak.

I've had patchy success with the generic versions -- sometimes I find they have more fragrance or additives. I shall have to keep plowing through them.

When my skin gets really senstitive, I use cetaphil, but I don't know if you have that over there?

Ack! I meant to say but forgot because it was before 9 am and I was running way late for work, another good, cheap alternative is baby soap/shampoo etc. It's all designed for sensitive skin.

Oooh. I shall have to look into this. Especially for body moisturizer, since it's so hard to find one that isn't perfumed out the wazoo.

Baby stuff is value and it's all for sensitive skin.

I don't know if you can get it, but there's a great Aveeno moisturiser with oatmeal in it, that I like, too, if you want to go beyond the plain old sorbolene with no scent or anything added to it route.

Cliniderm. It's a little pricey, but it works. The moisturiser is good, too.

Other than that, if you can handle a little scent, Burt's Bees Ginger Citrus Body wash is also okay. And it smells fantastic.

Ooh, options. I can handle a little scent in a body wash, but not in a face wash. I love Burt's Bees lip balm, so I shall have to try that out.

Good luck (especially with the Burt's -- it smells so good!). Be careful about the Cetaphil -- I know it's supposed to be fantastic, but it's never done anything more than irritate my skin. Sad.

I really do recommend checking out the Cliniderm Gentle Cleanser; it was a real help when I needed it badly.

And if you need shampoo too, I used Prairie Naturals Northern Lights until I moved away from home. They don't sell it here, sadly. What I hadn't realised is that shampoo can also irritate badly if the face doesn't like what's in it!

I recommend Cetaphil, their entire product line was conceived for use by people with sensitive skin. Their stuff is hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, biodegratible, and most of them are fragrence-free.

It's what my dermatologist recommends, and I use their moisturizing cream daily. Cetaphil makes liquid/gel skin cleaner that works great, should be perfect for gym usage.

I like St. Ives oatmeal and shea butter body wash. Suave used to have some great ones (especially the ones with aloe in them) but I think they discontinued those.

I find St. Ives to be a little harsh for me in general, but I haven't tried the oatmeal and shea butter one. What's the fragrance level like?

What is it with companies discontinuing their sensitive skin lines? It's not like it's a declining market.

I've tried and don't much like most of the St. Ives stuff, but the oatmeal and shea butter is the exception. The smell is mild (especially compared to most of their stuff, which tends to be very fragrant) and I've noticed it actually helps alleviate the dry itchiness of my skin. The best I can hope for with most soaps is that they don't make it worse.

Yeah, the habit of discontinuing my favorite soaps ticks me off too. Suave used to have an aloe & water lily body wash that I loved to death. The scent was light, non-intrusive, and refreshing (you could really only smell it in the shower; it was so light it faded away by the time you dried off), and the aloe was very soothing--especially if I'd managed to sunburn myself or something. I still grieve over it. I've tried some of their Naturals line, and they're just too harsh. I end up all itchy and miserable. Speaking of which, I need to buy more soap. I've run out of everything else, and all I've got is half a bottle of Suave Naturals Ocean Breeze. :P No wonder I've been scratching so much.

Some of Caress's stuff is also not too bad (though some of it is very fragrant), but it's usually also expensive. I picked up a bottle I found on clearance a while back, and it's gentle enough that I can use it on my face...though it's still not as good as the Suave or the St. Ives.

I shall have to give it a try, then. I just have a knee-jerk suspicion of St. Ives.

When I'm at home, I really like Avene's cold cream bar, for face and body. It's on the pricey side, but it does last for quite a while, as long as you don't leave it sitting in water. Because it's soap-free it doesn't actually lather, but it cleans quite nicely. I keep trying new things (as witnessed by this post), but I keep going back to it, especially when my skin gets worked up into an itch.

I think the oatmeal and shea butter stuff is one of the ones they sell in sample size. So if you can find that, might be worth trying it that way to save money if it turns out not to work for you.

I'm late to the party, as always.

Ginger is allergic to soap. Her dermatologist recommended she try the Dermalogica cleanser. She's been satisfied with the results so far, and it's worked for her long past the point where most things cause her to start breaking out or develop a rash. It's not the greatest smelling stuff out of the bottle (very medicinal), but it doesn't seem to leave much of a scent on use.

They're at least making a gesture at being socially responsible, but I have no idea how that works out in practice, nor was I able to find much information about what kind of chemical cocktail they're selling.

Also: VividCon? Just on the other side of O'Hare from our condo, about 20 minutes away. Well, 20 minutes outside of rush hour and/or exciting road deconstruction blockades.

Don't have an LJ acct - try this soap

Try this brand. Kiss My Face. I use the Aloe Vera and Olive Oil Bars. Basically no added scent, and doesn't dry your skin.

They don't use animals for testing, if that is a concern.
