You know what I could really use right now?* Computer trouble.

I am attempting to take advantage of my friends' knowledge! I ran a standard permissions repair and a disk verification on my computer. Disk verification failed and shouted at me in angry red letters.

Invalid volume file count
Invalid volume directory count

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired

Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed

I don't suppose anyone has any suggestions? Other than 'choose between bread/lettuce and computers?' I am so hoping that I am not pooched.

* (It's not like I'm already concerned I may have started stress-vomiting or anything.)

AHHHHHH, why aren't any of my external hard drives loading?

Back up first, if you can. If none of your external drives are mounting, can you email yourself important docs and burn stuff to cds?

After you've done that, follow the steps here in order (try the disk utility on the install disc first if you can; if you don't have the install disc or can't boot to it or the repair still fails there, try starting in single user mode and running fsck):

Sometimes running the repair when you aren't booted to the volume works even if the first repair fails. But if ALL these steps fail, yeah, you are likely going to need to try an erase and install (NOT an archive and install). And if that fails, you'll need to replace the harddrive in the computer itself. I can help you with that, so email me before you go to a repair place.

\o/!!!! At least for now. Is still being twitchy, but less freeze-y and red-letter yelling. It's recognizing one of my externals but not the other -- it's recognizing the media one, but not the one I've been (long) intending to use for Time Machine.

Some success?

Also, ahahah, I spent most of the morning trying to get a hold of my folks, since my lack of credit card meant I used theirs, and one has automatic extension of warrantee. This took rather longer than expected (and ended up not happening) as it turns out they're on vacation in Niagara Falls.

I certainly shall, especially as I fear my computer and I have reached the most tentative of equilibriums.

Oooooh, you know what I need help with? Eating some delicious Indian food, at some point. Om nom nom.

Back up all your shit and run the repair from a boot disk, if at all possible. This is actually not an epic fail situation -- I've had this happen many times and Disk Utility can usually handle it just fine.

I've had Macs all my life, and it's the first time I've seen it. I tend to get larger epic fails, like the time pixels started running sideways across my laptop screen, and the screen itself started jumping around, and my laptop neeeeeeever started again.

It was epic.

My computer is maybe somewhat better? Twitchy and jumping at butterflies, but no longer yelling at me in red. *crosses fingers*

I really hope it's all fine now!
